What Is The Board Dilemma?

In the article entitled "Purpose, Roles and Responsibilities of a Governing Board", the concept of the dilemma faced by boards is introduced.  It centers on the fundamental problem that when all is said and done, board's have to chose between:
  1. Providing management with enough freedom to potentially get the organization in a crippled condition without the board knowing about it or
  2. Tight controls that compromise the ability of the organization to be nimble in the marketplace or to grow at its potential speed.
